Dhaka: Bangladesh government on Monday promised to give “exemplary” punishment to culprits of the recent attack at the ISKCON temple in Dhaka and stressed that they will not be spared irrespective of their religion. In an official statement, the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh took note of the incident and blamed vested interests for trying to bring disrepute to the country.
The statement read, “Reports suggested the incident occurred on March 17, 2022, when Md Shafiullah (reportedly the owner of the plot adjacent to Wari Radhakanta Iskcon temple) is alleged to have made an attempt to take possession of the land following the court’s verdict. However, he was met with resistance by a group of 15-20 persons (including Rupanug Gaur Das, the Principal of Iskcon temple).” “It has been learnt that ISKCON members had filed proceedings against Md. Shafiullah under section 145 of the CRPC in 2016, 2017 and 2021. Dismissing the case, the Court had issued an order allowing Shafiullah to take possession (ownership) of the land. He claimed that he possesses the legal documentation and the original deed of the land,” it read further. The Bangladesh government confirmed that the law enforcement authorities are in touch with both parties and are trying to reach an amicable settlement.
“Investigation is underway in the matter. Exemplary punishment will be handed out to the guilty regardless of their religion,” added the government. Earlier on Thursday, a mob of over 200 people allegedly attacked devotees and vandalised the ISKCON Radhakanta Temple in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
